Panel Block
A apartment in a prefabricated concrete panel block. No pretending it is a loft and no gutting it — an interior cut to fit what the building actually is.
Apartments in panel blocks play by their own rules: narrow rooms, one window per room, 2.5 meters of height and walls that largely cannot be moved.
The usual mistake is to design against all that — white, minimal, open-plan — which leaves the apartment looking like an inferior version of something else. Here the building itself is the starting point.

Concept
The wall color is a muted olive — warmer and deeper than white, and from the same family as the colors these buildings had from the start. It isn’t period pastiche; it is an acceptance that the building has a character of its own.
The louvres on the media wall do what no freestanding piece of furniture can: they give a vertical rhythm to a room that is low and wide. The wall starts working as a whole rather than as a backdrop for equipment.
The furniture is low and pulled away from the walls only where it has to be. In a narrow living room, every centimeter of circulation is worth more than an extra cupboard.
The kitchen keeps its original layout and size. What changes is what actually changes comfort: full-height timber cabinetry, a round table instead of a rectangular one, and a chequerboard floor that brings character without a gut renovation.

Materials and detail
Colors
Muted olive on the walls, dark timber on the louvres, white fabric on the ceiling. A warm, slightly faded palette.
Timber
Walnut on the louvres and the living room furniture, lighter oak in the kitchen cabinetry. Two species, two temperatures.
Details
A cobalt leather sofa, wool cushions in earth tones, a rug in a traditional pattern. Things that look better with time rather than worse.
Do you have an apartment in a block?
A panel block, a 1970s slab, a studio in a tower — this is the most common kind of apartment in Poland and the least often designed well. Describe yours and I’ll come back with a quote within 24 hours.
