Loft — two-level apartment with concrete, black steel and city views

Interior design · loft

Loft

A loft on two levels. Concrete, black steel and a city that comes inside after dark through a whole wall of glass.

Height is the rarest resource in an apartment and the easiest to waste, by cutting the space with a floor across its whole area. Here the mezzanine takes up less than half the plan.

That keeps the living room at full double height, and gives the bedroom above it the same view from a different level.

Concept

The structure of the mezzanine is exposed and black. The I-beams, the stair and the balustrade form one family of elements that reads as a piece of furniture set into the space rather than as a conversion.

The balustrade is glass, so it doesn’t cut the view from below or turn the mezzanine into a closed cage. It is the one place where the steel gives way.

The kitchen is pushed under the mezzanine — the lowest part of the space gets the function that needs height least. The island comes out from under the soffit into the living room and marks the boundary between the zones.

The lighting is entirely spot and track. In a room with concrete walls, diffuse light flattens everything — here each material is lit separately.
